FAC, Finland Arctic Challenge, is a multi-sport expedition that takes place at the Pallas-Ylläs National Park, approx. 300 km / 185 miles above the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland, near the 7 Fells area.  The route takes participants through the most epic scenery: frozen forests and wetlands, stunning fells (peaks) for vast views of the wilderness, and fairytale landscape.

Total distance: Approximately 100 km / 65 miles. Each day participants are expected to traverse in the wilderness and powdery snow for approx. 5-6 hours. There are checkpoints/lunch locations along the way.

Terrain: All stages go through powdery snow and at times on hardpacked snow trails. Don’t underestimate soft snow that makes moving slow. The route is marked/guided so no navigation is required.

The course is undulating but the majority of it goes between 200 to 600 meters above sea level. The elevation details will be given to participants closer to the event.

Disciplines:

This 5-day multi-sports expedition includes snowshoeing, back-country skiing, fat-biking, and a half-marathon on snow trails, plus husky-dog sledding. Every sport is beginner-friendly so previous skills are not required, and participants will receive instructions on every morning. However, a good general fitness level is required. All confirmed participants will receive tips on training and preparation, as well as an invitation to an online information session before the event.

Stage 1 - Snowshoeing through the frozen wetlands and forest to the top of the Äkäskero. This 500m fell forms one of the iconic viewpoints of the Pallas-Ylläs National Park.

Stage 2 – Back-country skiing around the Kukas Fell and Äkässaivo, a holy place for Sámi, the indigenous people of Lapland.

Stage 3 - Winter fat biking in the frozen forest along snow trails. The windy route goes in and around the National Park border behind the stunning Kukas Fell and climbs along soft snowy ridges.

Stage 4 - Half marathon. Today you will get to push yourself with a more familiar sport. You will be running on snow trails through forests and fell sides. Depending on the temperature you may need to pace yourself and wear a buff or a mask to make breathing easier in the cold air.

Stage 5 – A half-day husky ride near the Ylläs Fell concludes the challenge. After this, we will head back to the host town of Levi to continue with a festive dinner and celebrations!

Expected weather:   Expected temperature in early February is between -15°C to -25°C but it could get colder than -30°C! You will start seeing rays of sun after the Polar Night. You can expect both snow as well as clear cold days. The event route and starting times may be modified for weather reasons.

Meals and accommodation: Main meals and accommodation throughout the event week are provided by the organiser but participants should bring their own sports snacks and electrolytes.
